Indonesian Consulate General is organizing Indonesian Dance Performance in Ho
Chi Minh City, Vinh Long City, Binh Phuoc province and Binh Hoa City from May 5th to 8th, 2012.
By having the theme of “Splendid West Sumbawa”, a group of 38 dancers
from West Sumbawa Regency and Dedy Lutan Dance Company from Jakarta are coming
to Vietnam. The theme
The group is led by Mr. Dedy Lutan, Indonesian national choreographer,
are performing dances from West Sumbawa Regency, Indonesia.

West Sumbawa is a regency of the Indonesian Province of West Nusa Tenggara. This province is located in adjacent to Bali.
The dance that Dedy Lutan Dance Company performed in Ho Chi Minh City on May 5th, 2012 is called “Perempuan Lala” (perempuan: woman, Lala is a designation for women from the noble family in Sumbawa).
“Perempuan Lala” is telling the issues of a woman came from poor fishing village who has been married by by man from the noble family whom symbolically represented by a shape of a “Keris” (Indonesian asymmetrical dagger or sword). The different social status made conflicts.
The inspiration of “Perempuan Lala” came from the story “Gadis Pantai” (The Girl from the Coast) by Pramoedya Ananta Toer who was an Indonesian author of novels, short stories, essays, polemic and histories. In his dance work, Dedy Lutan took the background of traditional art from Sumbawa and West Sumbawa (West Nusa Tenggara).

The show in Ho Chi Minh City was held at the Hall of the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City. It did not only attract the attention of the Indonesian community in the city, but also the Vietnamese University students as well.

The students were so excited participating in the quiz. It was all about general information about Indonesia such as Indonesian President, the capital city of Bali province, Indonesian currency, Indonesian national flag, etc. Of course, the winners went home with souvenir bags.
